What a psyllium COA tells you
A certificate of analysis (COA) records reported test results for an identified product and batch. Read it alongside the agreed purchase specification. A technical data sheet describes the product specification; a COA reports results. Neither a polished layout nor the word “pass” establishes that every buyer requirement has been checked.
1. Confirm the product and lot
- Match the product name and botanical identity, Plantago ovata, to the order.
- Check whether the document covers whole husk or husk powder, the commercial purity description, and particle size where relevant.
- Match the batch number to the offered or allocated lot. Ask how any supplier batch number relates to the manufacturer batch and packing labels.
- Check the issuer, report number, issue date and any manufacturing, sampling, testing or retest dates provided.
- Confirm whether this is a representative document from a previous lot or the actual sales-lot COA.
A document for a different form, grade or batch should be clarified before it is accepted as evidence for the order.
2. Read each result against the agreed requirement

A supplier may report “pass” against its own limit while the buyer has specified a tighter one. Compare the result with the purchase specification, not only with the supplier verdict. Where a decision depends on detection or quantification limits, request those details from the laboratory.
3. Check the relevant psyllium parameters
- Identity and description: product form, appearance and any agreed sensory requirements.
- Commercial purity: the meaning of the percentage and the assessment method. Do not treat purity as a substitute for contaminant testing.
- Moisture and ash: the numerical results, limits and reporting basis.

- Particle size: for powder, the sieve basis and pass criterion rather than a mesh number alone.
- Microbiology: the specified organisms or counts, methods, units and tested sample quantity where relevant.
- Contaminants: the particular metals, pesticide residues, mycotoxins, ethylene oxide or other tests required for the order, whether on the COA or a linked laboratory report.
This is a review checklist, not a universal mandatory test panel. Agree the scope for the product, intended use and destination before quotation. Do not assume an unreported parameter has passed.
4. Work through an example

5. Separate representative, sales-lot and independent evidence
A previous-lot COA can help assess the supplier’s reporting format and historical results. It does not prove that a future lot has the same values. An actual-lot COA should identify the allocated material. A separate laboratory report supports the sample and tests described in that report; confirm its link to the commercial lot and ask about sampling where that affects acceptance.
Do not assume that every supplier COA is an independent laboratory report. Request the underlying report when the buyer requires independent testing, and check that the laboratory’s relevant scope covers the requested work.
6. Understand the regulatory context
For US dietary supplement operations subject to 21 CFR Part 111, section 111.75 places conditions on relying on a supplier COA for applicable component specifications. These include establishing supplier reliability, a COA describing methods, limits and actual results, qualification records, periodic reconfirmation and quality-control review. Dietary-ingredient identity testing has a separate requirement, subject to the stated exemption procedure. This is a specific US dietary supplement context, not a universal acceptance rule for every psyllium shipment. Read 21 CFR 111.75.
7. Resolve gaps before approving the lot
- List each missing, unclear or out-of-specification item against the locked buyer requirement.
- Ask the supplier for clarification, a corrected report or additional testing, as appropriate.
- Agree the test scope, sample quantity, cost, lead time and party responsible before commissioning work.
- Keep unresolved requirements open. A promise to provide a report later is not a verified result.
- Record the review decision and keep the accepted COA and supporting reports linked to the order and lot.
A statement that additional testing is available describes a service option; it does not establish that the lot has been tested. Likewise, separately chargeable testing should be identified in the commercial offer so the buyer knows what is included.
Frequently asked questions
Is a COA the same as a TDS?
No. Use the TDS or agreed specification to define requirements and the COA to assess reported results for the identified batch.
Does 99% purity mean the material passes all safety tests?
No. Review each required safety parameter separately; a purity description does not answer those questions.
Can a previous-lot COA support an initial quotation?
It can support preliminary qualification if the buyer accepts that basis. Clearly state which actual-lot documents and tests remain due, and when they must be available.
Can “not detected” be treated as zero?
No. Ask what reporting limit and method the statement uses. The result must be sensitive enough to assess the agreed requirement.
Prepare a clear sourcing enquiry
Share the required form, purity, mesh where relevant, swelling requirement, quantity, destination and test list.
